silence in the basement by alex mura

published: july 20, 2024

rating:★★★★✩

from goodreads:
Amid a series of disappearances along Highway 50, lonely middle-aged truck driver Hank's pitstop at a remote and rundown motel turns sideways when he's beaten unconscious. Coming around, Hank finds himself trapped inside a dank basement, but he is not alone.

Silence in the Basement is a grim and unflinching exploration of free will, and a journey into the dark hearts of men—one who will mine the worst depths of depravity to exert his willpower, and another driven by a simple desire for survival.

my review:
okay well all i can say for this book is WHAT THE FUCK. the amount of times my jaw literally DROPPED reading this is insane. i definitely would have given this book 5 stars but the ending is not it for me, i wanted more!!! overall this book was GREAT, if you’re not into the gore then i would advise against this one!!! i did not know how gorey it was but it doesn’t bother me, so it was fine. my skin was definitely crawling during some points of the book.

mal is a conniving little one, i would have loved to see this book from his own POV to see what was going on in his head through it all. it may have made the book a little better but in its own the book was great.

hank, i really don’t know how to feel about him. ESPECIALLY after that ending.. i liked the whole fatherly protectiveness but it definitely took a turn into the weirdest direction and i really do not know how to feel about it but other than that he was a great MC.  i loved the memories/flashbacks that came in because it told us a little about him but he still was kind of a mystery the whole way through.

sara sort of seemed like a bystander in the whole book, she wasn’t really a big part of what made this book stand out to me but i guess it helped to have a different kind of energy. she seemed just like someone who needed to be protected and was frail, idk she wasn’t anything special for me.

the story line of this was pretty crazy, not something i expected from reading the synopsis but i really read any chance i got. i love how everything built upon each other. some parts were sort of predictable but at other times they weren’t and i was completely wrong about my hypothesis.

alex mura kept you entertained the whole way through, my life has been pretty busy being a graduate student but i finished this book in 9 days while other books have taken me months with my busy schedule. i literally had to keep reading to figure out what was gonna happen next. definitely recommend if you can handle the gore, if not please do not read! good job & congrats alex mura on your debut <3
