from goodreads:
“Welcome to the family,” Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I’ll soon learn that the Winchesters’ secrets are far more dangerous than my own…
Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.
I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.
I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late.
But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don’t know who I really am.
They don’t know what I’m capable of…
my review:
okay so this book was not what i was expecting at all!!! it was such a rollercoaster ride. it was a little slow at the beginning in the sense that nothing was really happening except some girl that was living in her car was going through job interviews and getting denied every time, until millie meets nina winchester.
i absolutely hated nina in the beginning butthen i felt for her. i understood her. i dont hate her for what she did to millie anymore because in a way she was trying to help her. nina winchester was the rudest, most insane employer that one could have and millie just so happened to get stuck with her. millie couldn't leave the only job she could get so she tries to stick it out. nina is the nightmare of all nightmares and millie thinks she is insane, just as everyone else does but what millie doesnt know is that its not nina whos insane...
andrew winchester is the perfect employer, the perfect man at that. he's the rich, always clean, hero to the villian story until millie uncovers the truth. while nina rips millie to shreds andrew is there to pick her back up and offer a helping hand. millie gets all the warnings she could possibly get from the "i dont speak english but im extremely hot and always on the look out" gardener and nina's manic episodes but she literally falls right into the trap.
once the housemaid got into the good parts it did not stop until the end. everything finally made sense and i could not put this down, i read every chance i got because i was addicted. freida knows how to hook you, i really did not expect the ending, what a plot twist that it was. this is a great psychological thriller, the suspense of the unknown really kept me going until my jaw couldn't drop anymore. this is absolutely worth the read!!!
favorite quotes:
"there’s something in his expression that sends a chill down my spine. and then he shakes his head, almost imperceptibly. almost like he’s trying to warn me. but he doesn’t say a word."
